Responsibility of Media towards society

Sima is gang-raped, few youngsters eve-tease a girl and made her walk without clothes at day time etc... Yes these kinds of issues are common for today’s news channels which are presented or broadcast by media very boldly. Electronic media mainly focuses on this kind of news and presents them time and again. Audiences like to entertain themselves by this content.

Rather than fulfilling their responsibility towards society, they are busy airing spicy and entertaining news. Why they are not representing women decently, respectfully and politely. I agree that media is presenting real stories and problems of women, but is the way of presentation commendable?

Print media is considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy and its content has always been assumed as true and factual. But for the presentation of truth they have lost their dignity and exceeded their limitations. A pertinent question now would be that why for money, rivalry, modernization and competition they are forgetting their duties and responsibility. In this fast competing world why we are not giving value to the lessons of humanity. Media is a mirror of the society, so it should keep its image clear.

The identity of media today is facing a crisis. In our male dominated society no one has time to understand the problems and feelings of women. But if the matter pertains to some gender-related scandal, then it becomes a matter of great interest and grabs many eyeballs.

Nearly 35 per cent women are working for media industry in present times and with their own unique identity. They are working in the fields of reporting, anchoring, marketing, public relations etc. Simultaneously the news of TV channels is focused on female-related-scandals. Reason behind this kind of news is to excite and sensationalise the public opinion. For the sake of money, media is losing its dignity and loyalty. What does that make out to be? Why we are not opposing all these heinous activities of media?

As citizens of a free society, we too have some accountability and duty towards our society and also for future generations. On one hand, media works for the upliftment of the society and women and on the other hand it is using them for their benefits and as a tool of entertainment. But now the time has come to make our media realize their faults and mistakes. There is great need to establish a clean and healthy society, and for that the media has to take initiatives against the societal problems.
